About Karen Bek

Karen weaves contemporary willow baskets using and adapting traditional techniques.  She incorporates other foraged, found and coppiced materials to create one off baskets that showcase the properties of natural materials.  Karen uses only sustainably harvested materials and grows 30 varieties of basketry willow, each selected for their different characteristics.  The underlying theme behind Karen's work is to visually represent the importance of protecting  living materials and demonstrating their usefulness beyond their living state in the outdoors.  Karen is keen to promote how craft work can contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally aware future.  Her work as a Social and Therapeutic Horticulture practitioner has influenced how she now teaches willow weaving and basketry, using the craft to promote wellbeing and therapeutic practices.  Karen designs her basketry and weaving workshops to encourage the practice of slow and meaningful craftwork and delivers workshops throughout East Anglia.
