The Mary Garden

The central image shows the cloisters in Lincoln Cathedral (otherwise known as the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln). The grassed area used to be a garden with flowers whose names related to the Virgin Mary: marigold was once, for example, known as Mary’s Gold. Those flowers appear in the border, surrounded by highly burnished 24 carat gold on gesso. Sold.
