About Simon Summers

Simon Summers Heritage Blacksmith is an Experimental archaeologist, consultant and tutor Simon accepts commissions, teaches his craft to all ages and works in a sustainable way. He supports rural industries and crafts by means of using heavy horses for timber extraction to make charcoal in an ancient way which then fuels his forge fires and furnaces for smelting iron and teaching. Simon was filmed for TV series 'Edwardian Farm' where he designed and handcrafted a copper weather vein, amongst other projects. He runs courses and events throughout the year on an Iron Age Fort in Sussex. These range from 1-1 blacksmithing classes, to copper repoussé 2 day long ceremonial craft retreats. Simon also runs Volunteer Action Camps throughout the year around the time of the Celtic festivals based on sharing skills of experimental archaeology and working the woodlands.

Simon Summers Heritage Blacksmith is an Experimental archaeologist, consultant and tutor specialising in quintessentially Celtic (Iron Age) metalworks, La Tène Culture art in repoussé, forge works, iron smelting & related subjects. Simon trained in heritage restoration building and blacksmithing and now works on an Iron Age Fort in Sussex. Simon works with the British museum, handling Iron Age artefacts and making replicas in copper repoussé. Simon’s research focuses on unlocking the history and meaning of the art in early metalworks created by ancient Britons, Gaulish and Celtic smiths. He researches the shamanic roots of the Celtic religion and belief systems which honour the earth, animal and human life as well as the afterlife and the greater universe around us all. When working with metals the moderate understanding of the spiritual ritual that may have been practiced here and which relate to the smith’s craft seen in other cultures.

A one day introductory course into early Celtic metal artworks.

Inspired by the Celts’ imagination, style, and skill, Simon; expert craft-smith will guide students to master the art of cold metal chasing to produce detailed jewellery like that from the golden age
of the Iron Age period.
