About Shalini Austin

I am a self taught metalsmith and I make Copper Things. It started as a hobby in 2008, making wire jewellery. As I progressed on my creative journey I learnt to appreciate sheet metal, especially copper. So it is only natural that my work is now taking a new path in coppersmithing. In recent years I have been working mainly with sheet copper, crafting a decorative and functional range of copper jewellery, home-ware and sculptures.  I love working with sheet metal and creating interesting 3D forms and shapes, often using nothing more than a simple hammer to create textures. Recently I have also started enamelling, which has proven very popular with jewellery customers

Gorgeous One Off Copper Flower Pendant JOY 01

I used a piercing saw to cut out the flower shape from heavy gauge copper sheet. Then I used my trusty cross pein hammer to give the flower texture and form.

Next step was to give it colour. I have used transparent glass powder because it shows off the hammered texture, almost like tiny folds that occur naturally in some flowers. The colour I used for this flower is called Persian Blue. In the middle there are little millefiore flowers in pastel blue and green

I love the shape and the 3D look of this flower. So tactile! Truly a Joyful piece! Definitely a personal favourite that I really really wanted to add to my own collection of jewellery. I guess I should make more of these…
