About Shalini Austin

I am a self taught metalsmith and I make Copper Things. Originally from New Delhi, India I now live in Stamford, Lincolnshire with my husband and 2 rescue dogs. It started as a hobby in 2008, making wire jewellery. As I progressed on my creative journey I learnt to appreciate sheet metal, especially copper. So it is only natural that my work is now taking a new path in fabricating metal. Since Summer 2014 I have been working mainly with sheet copper, crafting a decorative and functional range of copper jewellery, home-ware and sculptures.  I love working with sheet metal and creating interesting 3D forms and shapes, often using nothing more than a simple hammer to create textures. Recently I have also started kiln fired enamelling, which has proven very popular, especially with jewellery customers.

Copper & Labradorite Pendant

Labradorite Pendant 01 has a gorgeous rock set in textured copper sheet cut in the shape of a flower.

I used my piercing saw to cut out the flower shape and tabs that secure the stone. I like this setting for rock pendants which showcases the stone beautifully. This amazing piece of Labradorite  gives green and gold flashes depending on the angle you view it from.

There is no soldering involved in setting the stone. A lot of sawing and filing does happen. If it is a translucent stone then the copper colour shows through the stone beautifully with this setting.
