Sunflower Platter

As well as the natural wood finishes, sometimes I like to enhance my work with colour and Pyrography. This Platter was a Piece of Beech, turned to leave a raised centre for the seed head to add some definition. I then used my Peter Child’s Pyrography Machine to draw on the petals, before masking and colouring using Chestnut Products Ebonising Lacquer and Chestnut Products Spirit stains through an Airbrush and finished with a Satin Lacquer. Although it was time consuming with masking and drying times I was very happy with the final piece. It was also one of my mother in laws favourite pieces of my work, no guesses where it ended up. Turning to me is a hobby and a way of unwinding from my day Job with London Ambulance Service, and to see the enjoyment people get from my works whether as a student learning to turn, a family member or a customer at a craft fair is really satisfying.
