About Sarah Le Breton

Sarah Le Breton combines her passion for traditional craftsmanship with her sculpting background. Living in South West England and only using locally sourced Somerset willow, Sarah is evolving her work through designing and creating both baskets and sculptural lighting that often marry traditional English basket making techniques with a modern twist. Aware of our need to save highly endangered aspects of this heritage craft form, Sarah's love of antique furniture has led to her making and showcasing whole willow seated original Arts & Crafts chairs.  Recently, Sarah has begun harvesting her own rush material from the Somerset Levels and is learning how to rush seat chairs.  To further her knowledge and basketmaking skills, Sarah undertakes training with a 4th generation Somerset willow basketmaker.   An accomplished teacher, Sarah leads bespoke courses for a wide variety of clientele including River Cottage, the RHS, Somerset Rural Life Museum and the Soho House group.  Sarah also offers her own Willow Days, basketmaking courses that are held at Coates English Willow on the Somerset Levels.   Commissioning: I am particularly keen on commissions involving whole willow chair seating and architectural lighting.  Basketmaking wise, I am especially interested in commissions for hampers and handbags in which I can involve the use of English techniques and square work.  I very much enjoy recreating heritage baskets and working with museums.   Teaching: I’m known for teaching Willow Days on the Somerset Levels and throughout South West England. I’m also available to teach other willow courses. These can either be 1 to 1 tuition or bespoke courses for 5 to 8 people (depending on the type of basket making course required). Please contact me to discuss your requirements.   Research: I’m interested in being involved with research projects and education initiatives both in the UK and Europe that seek to champion our craft heritage, explore the impact of willow weaving in creative and therapeutical wellbeing services and address creating a sustainable future.
