Rachel O'Connell - ROCWORX
About Rachel O'Connell - ROCWORX
Marbling artist, Rachel O’Connell, is the artist behind ROCWORX®, a sustainable brand. A marbling artist, with over 30 years of experience marbling. Rachel began marbling in her teens and has since worked with artists all over the world, learning her craft in a creative environment. She works with sustainable natural materials, handmade papers and repurposed synthetic textiles, donated by local and national organisations, such as the Royal Opera House and Surf School.
Rachel trained as a leatherworker and started marbling on leather over a decade ago. With a background in interior design, and love for textile art Rachel combines her heritage skills with a contemporary design aesthetic to create cushions, lampshades, silk scarves and marbled leather bags, journals and cases. She also works on commission to conserve leather items.
Rachel is a sustainable maker, working to being net zero aligned. With a zero-waste philosophy, Rachel has a circular design range, using offcuts of marbled leather to create jewellery, bookmarks, key fobs and cable tidies. She works with busineses to repurpose their textiles and is currently working with theatrical textiles and ballet slippers received from the Royal Opera House, with some of the sales proceeds going to charity
Rachel has exhibited work in Manchester Art Gallery, Dulwich Picture Gallery and MAKE Southwest, Devon. She has work in The British Museum and planned exhibitions for 2024 in the British Museum and John Ruskin’s House, Brantwood Museum.
Rachel tutors marbling in schools, community groups, museums and galleries. She has tutored for Arts Council National Saturday Club. Rachel has also demonstrated with Heritage Crafts at Craftfestival and at Weald and Downland Living Museum. She also works privately with trauma survivors.
She offers a range of workshops, intergenerational Suminagashi marbling for adult and child, as well as marbling, simple book making, leatherwork and lampshade making.
Rachel is also a member of
