About Spiral Path Book Studio
Spiral Path Book Studio Ltd, which specialises in the conservation and repair of books and paper items and traditional hand bookbinding, is owned and run by Paul Taylor and Terry Bowden who formed the company in Auckland, New Zealand back in 2005. We returned to the UK in 2017 re-establishing our studio in Langport in Somerset, and have carried out a wide variety of conservation and binding projects for many private customers along with local and national institutions including Wells Cathedral Library and Bristol Archives. Paul is a qualified Book and Paper Conservator and an Accredited member of ICON (Institute of Conservation) and uses modern conservation techniques and materials alongside traditional binding methods to conserve and restore damaged books, paper documents, maps, manuscripts, parchment and wax seals. Paul has over 34 years’ experience working in institutions throughout the UK including The National Archives at Kew, Lancaster University, Canterbury Cathedral Archives, John Rylands Library in Manchester and was the inaugural Preservation Manager for Auckland City Libraries. We also construct custom-made archival phase boxes, clamshell boxes and archival storage enclosures, as well as take commissions for new bindings. As part of our preservation services we can digitise and supply electronic copies of both flat and bound formats to enable greater accessibility of information for fragile or damaged items. Over the last sixteen years we have also run a number of courses covering a range of practical binding projects to disaster preparedness and safe handling of archival material. We can undertake conservation treatment work on individual items and can also carry out assessments and produce conservation programmes for larger collections with long term preservation requirements. Paul Taylor has examples of his work in private and public collections worldwide.
