About Paivi Suomi

I am a hand weaver, spinner and dyer. I use natural materials, wools, cottons, linen and natural plant dyes in my work.  I specialise in making traditional Sami crafts, such as band weaving, reindeer leather, pewter thread. I like to work with some of the almost forgotten crafts such as nalbinding, and fish tanning. I provide instruction on a one-to-one basis from my home studio in weaving, hand spinning and dyeing.

Fish Skin and Reindeer Leather Bracelets

Fish skins were tanned by the Saami people and other native cultures. The fish skins are descaled and go through a cleaning, tanning and softening process using tree barks, oils and other natural materials. The tanning process can take 2-6 weeks depending on the type of fish skin and tanning materials used. Fish leather does not smell fishy if the tanning has been done correctly.
