Julie Gurr

About Julie Gurr
Julie has been basketmaking for over 20 years now. She was originally taught traditional basketry by professional makers in England, Scotland, and Ireland, and now uses techniques learnt to make more contemporary pieces.
Much of the willow Julie uses is grown by her partner James and herself on Romney Marsh. Together they have formed an enterprise called Marsh Willow which concentrates more on willow growing, and making larger structures like plant supports and hurdles as well as artists charcoal production from willow offcuts. We also hope to diversify into coracle production soon!
There is an online shop on Julies website and you can contact her to discuss comissions

Specialised in
Julie specialises in willow basketmaking and now gives traditional baskets a modern twist by incorporating a variety of different coloured willows. She also uses traditional techniques from UK and other cultures to create new designs and organic sculptural pieces. The bands and stripes on Julie’s baskets are the natural colours of various willow varieties.
Julie loves experimenting with materials other than willow and sometimes incorporates them into her work. She is inspired by basketry and techniques from different cultures as well as the natural environment and the materials it provides.
