About Julia Complin

I am a woven textile designer living in Fife Scotland. For many years I worked designing fabrics for the fashion and home interiors markets. Today I design and hand weave scarves, shawls and home furnishings on a traditional floor loom. I love to explore colour combinations and fabric structures that flow from my ideas down through my finger tips and out across the loom. I use natural fibres and yarns, particularly British wools and alpaca, because of their beautiful soft qualities and because these are sustainable fibres, (a sheep grows a new fleece every year!). These are sourced from farms and small traditional mills in Devon England as well as from Shetland, Isle of Mull and Aberdeenshire in Scotland. Inspirations for my designs come from my daily walks around Fife and elsewhere in Scotland. I ponder patterns and colours on paths along the River Tay, across heathery hillsides and through colourful fishing villages of East Neuk. I am even inspired by the window display in an old fashioned sweet shop in St Andrews. Each design is also hand finished and may incorporate hand spun yarn or handmade felt. (It takes a long time to make them!). These are unique products that cannot be manufactured. I am also passionate about sharing my skills and have developed a range of weaving activities for primary age children that link into the school curriculum. I also run workshops for adults and other community groups.
