About Judith Letchford

As a traditional woodcarver I work with hand tools on seasoned wood, usually lime or oak. My workshop is located near Charlecote Park in rural Warwickshire. I work in a variety of styles from traditional decorative carving to portrait sculpture. I most enjoy figurative and narrative carving within a decorative context, especially birds and animals. My work is influenced by classical and medieval traditions as well as by artists and sculptors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Violet Pinwill and E.H. Sedding

The church at Lanteglos, like many churches in Devon and Cornwall, contains a rich array of carvings by Violet Pinwill, her sisters and her workshop. Helen Wilson’s ‘The Remarkable Pinwill Sisters’ led me to start exploring these churches and I chose this wonderful pierced carving from the choir stall at Lanteglos to explore her technique at first hand.
