Debbie is an Associate of the Society of Dyers and Colourists*  Her business The Mulberry Dyer was established in the early 1990s following the completion of the City and Guilds Art and Design – Embroidery course, with a view to producing naturally dyed embroidery silks, which at that time were unavailable. Meticulous research into the dyes and methods used in the 17th century meant that the silks produced were as accurate as possible. This research was then expanded into different periods of history and different fibres. Examples of work are on show in the V & A Museum, Hampton Court Palace, the Globe Theatre and many other museums and historic houses around the UK. As a specialist in the dyestuff madder Debbie runs courses and masterclasses and was the first dyer for many decades to successfully reproduce the Turkey Red process. Research and experimentation continues from both an historical perspective and also looking to the future for industrial use. Environmental impacts of natural dyes and mordants, fastness of the colours (light, wash and rub) are key to current research for which a “Green Achiever” was awarded. For several years she has been a consultant to industrial organisations who wish to add naturally dyed products to their range.
