About Emma Wheeler
I have been around cameras from a young age, a passion I inherited from my father. Starting out with a trusty 35mm SLR, I worked for several motorsports and lifestyle magazines shooting product images and action sports. Lately I have been focusing all my spare time restoring and creating images using large format wooden plate cameras from the late 1800s and also 35mm and medium format models up to around the mid 20th century.
I create tintypes (silver pictures on black metal), ambrotypes (images on glass), orotones (gilded photographs), film and paper negatives using a variety of photographic equipment and techniques dating back over 100 years. I also enjoy alternative processes to produce images known as 'cameraless photography' such as cyanotype and lumen printing. These images are made by placing objects such as flowers or leaves directly onto light sensitive paper & using either natural or UV lamp light to produce one of a kind images in a variety of colours (lumen) or in a beautiful deep blue (cyanotype or a 'blueprint').
In my spare time I like to buy, fix up and sell old cameras & lenses (1800-present day) and I also offer photo re-touching, old negative and slide scanning and various other analogue based photographic services. My goal is to educate and encourage more people to use antique and vintage equipment, keep it all functioning for as long as possible and to prove that you don't have to spend lots of money or get involved in anything too technical to get really exciting & visually pleasing results. This type of photography is a real 'hands on' environment, where images physically appear right before your eyes without a computer screen or phone in sight!
