About Emma Whitehead

I am a textile artist, designer & facilitator from County Down, Northern Ireland. For as long as I can remember the story of the objects and material we surround ourselves with has fascinated me. My background is in surface embroidery; I stitch paper, recycled beads and found objects onto Irish linen using my own studio-dyed yarns and threads.

I specialise in hand-stitched embroidery and paper ephemera ; I work with worn, used, discarded and broken materials to illustrate the journey of personal artefacts as they travel from usefulness to inevitable redundancy and then resonate personal stories in new textile pieces.

Silk Swallowtail Butterfly

This unique butterfly is hand embroidered with traditional stump-work techniques using my own studio hand-dyed, hand-painted pure mulberry silk threads. The Swallowtail is an iconic and dramatic butterfly, mounted on a vintage Irish damask linen pad with a hand-stitched label. This series is reminiscent of the heyday of Victorian Lepidoptery.
