About Emma Whitehead

I am a textile artist, designer & facilitator from County Down, Northern Ireland. For as long as I can remember the story of the objects and material we surround ourselves with has fascinated me. My background is in surface embroidery; I stitch paper, recycled beads and found objects onto Irish linen using my own studio-dyed yarns and threads.

I specialise in hand-stitched embroidery and paper ephemera ; I work with worn, used, discarded and broken materials to illustrate the journey of personal artefacts as they travel from usefulness to inevitable redundancy and then resonate personal stories in new textile pieces.

Fritillary Butterfly

The intricate patterning on this Fritillary is hand embroidered with a mix of 100% pure merino and silk yarns giving it substantial texture and colour. The Fritillary is mounted on a vintage Irish damask linen pad with a hand-stitched label and comes with a brooch back for wearable options. This series is reminiscent of the heyday of Victorian Lepidopterology.
