About Carla Costa
Set in a lovely, old, south facing cobbled mews in London between Kensal Rise and Ladbroke Grove, aCADEIREIRA atelier offers a unique blend of British, French, Portuguese and contemporary influenced upholstery and chair weaving, knowledgeable, friendly service, and an inspiring commitment to making a difference to the environment and in people’s lives. Founder and owner Carla Costa works closely with suppliers who are equally passionate about sourcing high quality and sustainable materials. These materials are then celebrated in the furniture pieces Carla creates, restores and teaches, using traditional, modern and experimental methods and techniques. Since the launch of the project in 2015, aCADEIREIRA won a Portuguese Government Award for its entrepreneurial relevance and innovation, and Carla’s considerate approach to business, the environment, and people training has been inspiring customers and followers to reuse, restore and recycle their old seating furniture instead of sending them to landfill. Part of the profits from aCADEIREIRA go to mentoring and consulting with individuals and micro-small businesses in the exploration of their potential, mapping plans to pursuit their passions and business ideas, and train them. Amongst many other things, Carla is certified by the AMUSF (Association of Master Upholsterers), studied interior design with KLC, and is a seasoned business and marketing communications professional who takes an active interest in social entrepreneurship, circular economy, heritage and craftsmanship, and passionately believes in creativity as a way to help tackle unemployment and the combat of loneliness for the most vulnerable. She is the granddaughter of a master tailor and of a traditional barber, and when she has her maker hat on, she works on private and commercial commissions, collaborations with designers/architects/furniture makers and retailers, and teaches leisure and professional courses. The atelier is open to the public by appointment only, but everyone is welcome for a chat and/or visit the studio. All you need to do is send her an email to arrange a suitable time.
