‘My father taught me all the skills of a traditional blacksmith, including drawing down points or tapers, punching holes, splitting, and bending, shaping and texturing the metal. I have developed a very distinct style: simple flowing lines which are expressed both in my sculptural work and in the functional gates and railings that I design and make’ Melissa Cole

Melissa Cole is a blacksmith with 20 years’ experience working to commission designing and making bespoke traditional and contemporary forged metal pieces for the home and garden. Her forge and gallery with examples of her elegant flowing forge work are open by appointment through the year and Melissa also regularly teaches introductory blacksmithing courses privately from her Wiltshire forge and at West Dean College.

In 2007 Melissa was awarded a prestigious ‘Bronze Medal’ from The Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths in recognition of the blacksmithing skills seen in her public and private work and the successful forging-in-schools projects. This makes Melissa a Fellow of The Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths and she is now regarded as a Master Blacksmith.
